Digital Signage at UBC Alumni Weekend 2012

What did we do?

We wanted to see what would be involved in using the many digital signage screens across the UBC Vancouver campus to promote Alumni Weekend 2012. This was done because during normal operation, despite being on the same network, the digital signage screens across campus operate as individual nodes that serve the units that purchased them. We wanted to see if we can leverage the enterprise infrastructure that exists to enhance the experience of Alumni Weekend 2012 participants.

How did we do it?

    • Identified signs that would be seen by Alumni Weekend participants and worked with the respective signage owners to “take over” their screens for Saturday, May 26th 2012.
    • Specified what content would add value to the Alumni Weekend experience. This included:
      • A curated stream of tweets and tweets with pictures from the #UBCAlumniWknd conversation on Twitter
      • Photos from the Alumni Weekend photo booth
      • Video from the Start An Evolution campaign
      • Event postings that highlighted upcoming events throughout the day
    • Staffing and resources.
      • One staff member was updating signage schedules, creating content, and curating tweets from 7:30am to 5:00pm

The Numbers

    • 27 screens were displaying Alumni Weekend content (event counts are system wide from 7:00am-5:00pm)
    • Total impressions for Alumni Weekend content: 60114

 Next Steps

    • The next campus-wide event that we’ll be trying this “coordinated” approach with is Imagine Day 2012 (September 4th, 2012)
    • For Alumni Weekend 2013 we’ll look to:
      • Live-stream video of events happening to signs across campus
      • Provide campus maps of where upcoming events are
      • Compile alumni profiles to be shared across campus
      • Provide a bus schedule for the Alumni Weekend shuttles that is updated in real-time

Special Thanks

The opportunity to add to a cohesive experience for our alumni and friends wouldn’t have been possible without the help of:

  • UBC Alumni Affairs
  • UBC Development Office
  • Centre for Student Involvement
  • UBC Career Services
  • Enrolment Services
  • Sauder School of Business
  • UBC Library
  • UBC Sustainability Office (CIRS)
  • Faculty of Education
  • Faculty of Law at Allard Hall
  • Faculty of Arts

Reflections on Digital Signage

The roll out of digital signage on campus is definitely something that’s happening quickly – we were certainly impressed by the number of campus units who were ready to on-board when we launched the service. As always, with rapid changes we need to take the time to reflect on the implications of that growth.

Here’s a link to a recent blog post that touches on the growth of digital signage: http://blogs.ubc.ca/trees/2011/08/10/not-really-about-a-tree/

A few points from the signage team:

  • Content is the absolute key to successful digital signage implementations – what content strikes a note with you and your community here at UBC?
  • How can rich visuals be used to help bring our “story” to life?
  • Just as an FYI: signage requests come from a unit level – there’s no specific mandate that pushes units to purchase signage.

Content Creation Workshop – June 14th, 2011

DIGITAL SIGNAGE
Workshop: Creating Effective Content and Design

June 14 2011

By now you’ve probably heard about or seen the Digital Signage installations across campus – if you haven’t there is a new website that explains it all: http://digitalsignage.ubc.ca. The bottom line is that with the growth of digital signage it’s imperative that we, as university communicators, know power of this medium and how to make the most of this new tool. Content Creators (Cardinals, Students, Faculty and Staff) are able to submit content for a digital sign, given that it meets the standards of the Digital Signage Content Guidelines. It is possible for everyone to create effective Digital Signage content by learning a few important basics – so that’s why we’re holding a workshop! Please join us for a hands-on session in creating effective signage content and design. Since this is our first workshop, we’re keeping the numbers tight – so register before it fills up!

We request that you bring in a project, message, or initiative that you would like to communicate on Digital Signage as well as your own laptop. This will be a learning workshop session and by the end of it you should have a final piece of content that is digital signage ready.

Here are the details:

When: June 14th, 2011 10am-12pm
